Catherine's Annual Christmas Musical Celebration Spotlights Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a selection of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the former royal to broaden opportunities for music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the charity, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
