England to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground
The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, provided that they attain the relatively straightforward qualification for a championship hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s game since May 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to welcome the national team for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The English side are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Kickoff and Protest
The event was inaugurated at an gathering in central London on Wednesday night. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were confronted as they entered the venue by about 50 protesters, who demanded the Israeli team to be removed from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were held up with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will include the Dragons if they make it.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a start time at 5pm.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that do not reach the tournament through that route.
Venues and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground complete the event’s nine venues. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight staged at every host’s main arena.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
