People have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed state memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the proposal.

A senior representative involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the morning session ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • Future administration of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.

In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the captives. Israel reports 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis desire the war to conclude in return for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and locality areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the dusk arrives, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area indicated two more victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, medics said.
