Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
