Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
