The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been located inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were detected on Friday. The cooling units were concealed behind a drywall partition in the apartment, situated in the Innsbruck area.

Two men, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were detained in June. The 55-year-old, a work associate of the female victim, stated to police last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but disputed homicide.

Informing the media earlier, a official for the public prosecutor's office said the two suspects were being held on "high likelihood of murder".

Personal details of those involved have not been released by police, in compliance with national regulations.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Police said the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her child to see her family in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active in foreign locations several times.

But when officers entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was discovered.

An individual also stated overhearing a commotion in the flat, and screams of "mum" on the date the pair were believed to have vanished.

A broader police investigation was launched, with investigators discovering multiple communications sent from the mother's device—including a notice of quitting to her employer and texts to the 55-year-old suspect.

Authorities said a significant cash transfer was also sent to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office told media representatives on recently that a storage facility had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been placed there.

The brothers extracted the freezer from the storage space on the very day the victims vanished, the official stated. And a week later, they acquired an additional appliance.

Authorities say they consider this indicates the fatalities were premeditated.

"The cause of death could not be determined due to the condition of the victims," the official stated.

A legal representative—representing the state—said the exact sequence of events is not yet known, but the victims were carefully placed and not discovered during a earlier inspection.

Although the brothers were arrested in the summer, it was only on 12 November that the elder brother confessed to an occurrence and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any murderous intent, officials confirmed.

At the same time, his brother acknowledged a cover-up but disputed involvement in a murder.

The pair are presently in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in two Austrian cities, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative stated the "suspected killing of two... symbolizes the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and uncovers a brutal scheme".

"Women and girls are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are of the female gender," they added.

"Murders of women are a deeply rooted and widespread concern that we must address decisively."
