That Gory Cartoon Film Conclusion That Haunts Fans
Among every mature animated films I’ve ever watched, no other has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced conclusion of a viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker crafted a dark, bleak and often savage world that included some tiny , desolate hints of hope.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a drive to advance the medium further, the director clarified that it was rather an attempt to communicate a global, multicultural message about “the common origin of every conflict.”
This theme is conveyed by means of a band of vividly colored bears , openly inspired by a well-known line of lovable characters.
Growing up in a community centered on militarism and the military-industrial complex, numerous these creatures are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture which states them they previously were rulers of the forest, until the unicorns drove them out.
Some did not entirely fallen for the brainwashing, and prefer to experiment with drugs or engage sexually in the woods.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals have visible sexual organs , obvious libidos.
For one especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the battle against the unicorns turns into a road to power — and specifically to dominance over his gentler, nicer brother Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor and a seeming sociopath , and when fear overcomes his squad and kills his fellow soldiers individually, he seizes increasingly power for himself, via progressively violent, harmful methods.
At the same time, the unicorns are enduring their own nightmare, in the form of an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“Initially, it seems like a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “However it becomes a more dramatic and sad movie. And in the finale, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the more whimsical movies from an iconic animator, which find a naughty glee in allowing drawn beings swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it becomes more akin to a darker film from the same creator, with increasingly graphic violence and a noticeable connection to the real horror of conflict.
By the end, it becomes a complete extreme drama massacre.
The horror which makes this a Halloween-friendly watch starts a lot earlier than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted fans of gore, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to watch a film they have not watched previously, and are able to withstand a narrative which delivers unflinching brutality.
View it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the finale will crawl under your skin and take up residence there.
