The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
