As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”

Background and Prior Actions

The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military presence.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Tactics Amid Pressure

The administration has faced growing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.

While the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to suggest a broader geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
